Remembering the westerns of our childhood, we often think of American history as a glorious saga, a fantastic ride with resounding revolver shots, populated by gold diggers who became rich overnight, wild saloons and conquering steam engines. There's bound to be some truth in all that. But the great adventure of the New World is also an illegitimate tale, a less glorious tale of disappointment, poverty and misfortune.
Alcohol is no exception to this rule, as he is undoubtedly the oldest emigrant in the United States. Disembarked from the ship with his Spanish, Batavian and British companions, he first made moonshine in makeshift stills and applejack in the coldest regions. Driven away by rum, which held the spittoon in the New England colonies, he took his bundle and set off in the only direction he knew: the West.
A child with windy soles, he dragged his gaiters along the rivers and then the railways. Sniffing out business, he got off the wagon in Lexington, Kentucky. Charmed by the blue grass of the vast prairies, he stayed there for many years, enjoying international success under the gentle name of Bourbon. But eternally dissatisfied, he continued his journey alongside the pioneers, pushing back the frontier he had never known.
Five centuries later, the continent holds no secrets for him. He has reached the coasts of the Pacific and is even a single malt in Washington State. But the adventure doesn't stop there, it never stops. No peace for the brave, no rest for the drunk. The conquest continues.
