Maker’s Mark
Bourbon
The small Maker’s Mark distillery is notable for using wheat (red winter wheat) instead of rye in its grain mash (corn, wheat, malted barley). The wheat contributes more softness and less bitterness to the bourbon. On the American label, it is designated as Whisky rather than Whiskey, unlike most other Bourbons. Each bottle is hand-dipped in wax for a unique finish. During ageing, the barrels are rotated regularly (top-middle-bottom) to ensure optimal maturation, a costly process for the distillery. Its rich aromatic palette features ripe fruits (apricots, peaches), freshly popped corn, oil-rich nuts (macadamia nuts, almonds), caramel sauce, vanilla, and spices (nutmeg, cinnamon). The finish is long, with spices and a robust oak influence.
