Blair Athol 14 year old 2009

James Eadie, Single Cask, Re-charred Hogshead

Those who have encountered a glass of Bell’s – a famous blended Scotch widely consumed across the Channel – will easily recognise the influence of Blair Athol in its blend by tasting this particularly spicy single cask, marked by roasted nuts: cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, nutmeg... All wrapped in comforting notes of cake batter and brown sugar. A powerful yet indulgent whisky.

The Distillery

Built in Pitlochry in 1798, this East Highland distillery was first named after Aldour, the spring which supplied its water. It was extended in 1825 and took the name of Blair Athol. Its production capacity was doubled in the 1970s to cater to the “Bell's” brand of blended whisky, of which Blair Athol is the backbone and which was then the most widely drunk whisky in Britain. It is located not far from the small distillery at Edradour and is visible from the windows of the carriages of the famous Highland Railway Line.
