The oldest distillery on the Isle of Islay is located in the village of Bowmore. It was built in 1779 by John Simpson and has had several owners before finally becoming part of the Morisson Bowmore Distillers group (Beam Suntory). Interestingly, the village church is round, so the devil cannot hide in a corner. One of the distillery's most iconic Bowmores is the first version of Black Bowmore 1964, launched in 1993. The most famous cellar is No. 1, located just below sea level. The distillery produces several versions for duty free or specific countries, as well as limited editions and very high-end products.

Bowmore: Islay Peated Whisky, Where Elegance Meets Power

The Legacy of Islay’s Oldest Distillery

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, the famed Scottish island known for its peated whiskies. It embodies the essence of Islay Scotch, yet with a softer, more balanced touch than neighboring distilleries like Laphroaig or Ardbeg. While those embrace raw intensity, Bowmore offers a refined combination of smoke, coastal salinity, and ripe fruit sweetness.

Its seaside location, along the shores of Loch Indaal, gives Bowmore single malts their unmistakable maritime character, blending sea spray, sherry cask influence, and a gentle smoky backbone.

A Distinctive Style: Balanced Peat and Aromatic Depth

Bowmore is often described as an Islay whisky for those who value complexity over brute force. Unlike the medicinal notes of Lagavulin or Port Charlotte, Bowmore’s style is more subtle—smoky, yes, but also floral and layered.

  • Nose: Fine peat smoke, orange zest, dried fruit.

  • Palate: Honey, sea salt, dark chocolate, cold ash, plum.

  • Finish: Long, slightly spicy, lingering with the mist of Islay.

From Bowmore 12 to Vault Editions: A Legendary Range

The Bowmore 12 Year Old is an ideal entry point into the world of peated Scotch. Its smoky notes are beautifully balanced by vanilla and candied fruit, making it both approachable and distinctive.

Further up the range, Bowmore 15 Year Old Sherry Cask offers richness from aging in Oloroso casks, while the 18 Year Old represents pure elegance, with aromas of leather, chocolate, coffee, and warm spices.

Collectors and aficionados will appreciate limited editions like the Vault Editions, as well as rare aged bottlings such as Bowmore 25, 27, or 30 Year Old—sometimes even available as single cask releases.

Bowmore Among Islay’s Peated Giants

In the world of Islay whisky, Bowmore holds a unique position:

  • More elegant and nuanced than Ardbeg, known for its intense phenolic power.

  • Less medicinal than Laphroaig, with a smoother approach to peat.

  • Less sweet than some expressions from Bruichladdich or Bunnahabhain, which explore more unorthodox styles.

Bowmore appeals equally to single malt lovers and those looking for a balanced, accessible peated profile.

Tasting a Bowmore: A Moment of Stillness

Bowmore is a whisky that invites contemplation, whether enjoyed:

  • Neat, in a tulip glass, to explore its smoky and briny layers.

  • With a drop of water, to unveil hidden notes of stone fruits and nuts.

  • As a pairing, with blue cheese, oysters, or dark chocolate.

It’s perfect for fans of characterful whiskies, but also ideal for those beginning their journey into the world of peat without diving into overwhelming phenolic intensity.

Why Choose Bowmore Whisky?

  • A historic distillery: Founded in 1779, a true Islay legend.

  • A unique style: Balanced peat, refined fruitiness, elegant salinity.

  • A diverse range: From the classic 12 Year Old to collector editions.

  • A refined alternative: To the bolder styles of Islay’s smoky heavyweights.

  • Globally acclaimed: Trusted by whisky experts and enthusiasts alike.
