The takeover by Glenmorangie plc in 1997 marked a new beginning for the distillery. The distillery uses water from Loch Uigeadail, located less than 5 kilometers away. The very smoky/peaty malts come from the village maltings of Port Ellen. It offers a “classic” range and limited editions with original aging and variations in the percentage of phenols. Ardbeg Ten is the most peaty/smoky single malt in a classic production (excluding limited editions or series). The distillery offers one or two new versions per year. Older versions of Ardbeg bottled independently, before the official ones, have become rare and highly sought after.

Ardbeg: The Peated Soul of Islay

For over two centuries, Ardbeg has stood as a benchmark for lovers of intensely peated whisky. Founded in 1815 on the legendary island of Islay, off Scotland’s rugged west coast, Ardbeg produces bold, smoky, and deeply maritime single malts — raw yet remarkably precise. In contrast to the lighter profiles of distilleries like Glenfiddich or Auchentoshan, Ardbeg embraces its wild nature and unmistakable smoky character that thrills seasoned drinkers.

Rooted in a windswept, elemental landscape, the distillery draws its essence from local peat, pure spring water, and the briny sea air. Every sip evokes a sense of place: windswept cliffs, smoldering hearths, mist-covered bogs. This is not just whisky — it’s an Islay experience.

A Story of Tradition, Closure, and Revival

Like many historic distilleries, Ardbeg faced challenging times throughout the 20th century, with periods of silence and changes in ownership. Once overshadowed by neighbors like Lagavulin and Laphroaig, Ardbeg staged a remarkable comeback in the 1990s, thanks to careful revival efforts and backing from the Glenmorangie Company. Since then, it has earned cult status among whisky connoisseurs and has become one of Scotland’s most celebrated peated single malts.

Powerful, Complex Whiskies from Islay

Ardbeg 10 Year Old

The heart of the core range. This non-chill filtered whisky delivers a bold, dry peat smoke, balanced by notes of lemon zest, smoked herbs, toasted malt, and licorice. Punchy and vibrant, yet astonishingly balanced — a true Islay classic.

Ardbeg Uigeadail

A marriage of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, Uigeadail offers a rounder, spicier expression, with flavors of dark roasted coffee, black fruit, and the unmistakable peat smoke. A fan favorite for its rich complexity and bold character.

Ardbeg Corryvreckan

Named after a legendary whirlpool off the coast of Islay, Corryvreckan is the most intense of Ardbeg’s core expressions. With bold spice, deep oak, and a swirling smoky force, it’s a whisky that makes a statement from the first sip.

Ardbeg An Oa

A more approachable take on the Ardbeg style. An Oa brings together caramel sweetness, gentle smoke, and subtle oak spice. Perfect for those looking to discover peated whisky without being overwhelmed.

Other Editions

Ardbeg’s limited editions are highly sought after, with releases like the Wee Beastie 5 Year Old bringing youthful fire and plenty of smoke. Each year, new bottlings excite collectors and seasoned drinkers alike.

Why Choose an Ardbeg Whisky?

Choosing Ardbeg means choosing a whisky experience that’s bold, unapologetic, and unforgettable. One of the most iconic distilleries on Islay, Ardbeg is a go-to for those seeking peated Scotch whisky with intensity, complexity, and authenticity.

Its signature profile blends peat smoke, briny sea spray, citrus peel, seaweed, black pepper, and charred oak — delivering a sensorial journey unmatched in the whisky world. Yet, beneath this power lies a precise craftsmanship and dedication to traditional methods, including non-chill filtration and high-proof bottlings that preserve every nuance of aroma and texture.

Ardbeg vs Other Peated Whiskies

In the world of Islay single malts, Ardbeg holds a unique position. It’s bolder than Bowmore, yet less medicinal than Laphroaig. Its style is explosive, rich, and masterfully balanced — the ultimate example of what peated whiskycan be. For anyone looking to explore smoky Scotch in its most expressive form, Ardbeg is an essential stop on the journey.
