The Caol Ila distillery was founded in 1846. It was entirely rebuilt and extended in 1879. Further renovations and six new stills were added in 1974, giving way to today’s distillery. Caol Ila is located in the north of Islay, across from the island of Jura, from where the famous "Paps of Jura" can be seen on a clear day. The distillery, which mainly produces peated/smoky whiskies, released an unpeated single malt in 2006, which is still available with age statements. In 2011, Caol Ila Moch, a No Age Statement (NAS) single malt was released, and quickly became a classic. The Caol Ila distillery boasts the largest production capacity of the island. About 15% of the malt produced is bottled as single malt, while the rest is blended for the famous Johnnie Walker brand.
