Bunnahabhain 16 year old 2007

Orcines, Sherry Butt, Cask n°1299

More discreet, often less peated - and clearly more challenging to pronounce! - than its Islay counterparts, Bunnahabhain remains a world-class distillery. Its distillate, originally light and smoky, has seen a wide range of styles, mostly maturing in ex-Sherry casks. Aged for 16 years in Oloroso sherry casks, this new Bunnahabhain Orcines is the epitome of a Christmas whisky: rich, full, and warm. It offers delightful notes of candied fruits and spices (reminiscent of a cake or English pudding), accented by a melted salinity (salted caramel) and adorned with the aristocratic rancio of an old Cognac. Long after tasting, the bottom of the glass reveals fragrances of precious wood and a cigar box. Viscous and oily, it's the perfect companion for a family or friends' gathering. In its 46% ABV reduced version, the spicy character becomes more discreet, allowing a beautiful roundness on the palate and a more pronounced caramelized note.

The Distillery

Founded in 1881, in the North-East of Islay, the Bunnahabhain distillery has long explored different paths. It first produced rather peated malts, before abandoning this style in the 1960s, and then reverting back to it over the last few years with heavily peated vintages like Toiteach or Cruach Mona, as well as for independent bottlers. However, the DNA of this distillery seems to be malts with little smoke and a strong marine character. The ageing in ex-sherry casks is particularly suited to this distillery. Like many others, it closed in 1982 during the overproduction crisis, resuming business once more in 1984. A vast modernisation plan by its owner, Distel, was launched in 2019.
