Blair Athol 11 year old 2011

James Eadie, Cask Finish, First Fill Malmsey Hogshead

Arguably the most renowned of the Madeira appellations, Malmsey is a sweet, rich, deep, and intense wine, the Portuguese equivalent of the famous Andalusian Pedro Ximénez. It brings to this bottling of Blair Athol a creamy texture and powerful aromas of caramelized dried fruits. Pleasantly malty, it is balanced by a subtle saline touch. A rare and noble digestif whisky.

The Distillery

Built in Pitlochry in 1798, this East Highland distillery was first named after Aldour, the spring which supplied its water. It was extended in 1825 and took the name of Blair Athol. Its production capacity was doubled in the 1970s to cater to the “Bell's” brand of blended whisky, of which Blair Athol is the backbone and which was then the most widely drunk whisky in Britain. It is located not far from the small distillery at Edradour and is visible from the windows of the carriages of the famous Highland Railway Line.
