The Chelsea Distillery in London, founded in 1820 by the Taylor family, was purchased in 1863 by James Burroughs, a Devon pharmacist. From 1876, he produced several brands of gin, including Beefeater, named after the Yeomen Warders, the uniformed guards of the Tower of London. It was an immediate hit and production moved in 1908, and again in 1958 to adapt its infrastructures. The family distillery, still active in the heart of London, was sold to the Whitbread group in 1987. Beefeater is still a great global success: 3 out of 4 bottles of gin sold in the United States are Beefeater.
