Created in 1862 by a Frenchman, Dupré Barbancourt, the namesake Haitian distillery has long owed its unique style to the Charente origins of its founder. The distillery used double distillation in copper pot stills and aged exclusively in Limousin oak casks from the Seguin-Moreau cooperage. With the succession of family owners, the company upgraded its equipment, abandoning the Charente still for a column. Cane juice and the Limousin casks have remained. In 1949, production was moved to the heart of the distillery's cane plantation, on the border with the Dominican Republic. Its unconventional rum is very distinctive, with a "fermented" nose and a strong woody character.
