The distillery was founded in 1797, in the Eastern Highlands which makes it one of the oldest in Scotland. It has had several owners, including Booth's Distillery, which produces the namesake Gin. It came under the control of the Beam Suntory group in 1994, with the purchase of the Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd group. Although the aromatic expression of the distillery's single malts does not contain phenolic compounds, peated/smoky notes can be detected more acutely in part of the production distilled before 1994. In 2009, the range was completely revamped and gave birth to the single malt 1979 Founders Reserve (no age statement), a 12 Year Old and two vintages. The distillery uses several types of casks, in addition to traditional maturation, such as red wine casks (Bordeaux) or new oak casks (Virgin Oak).
