1776, the Pepper family whisky started its production during the American Revolution, and continued until 1961. The family built and operated two distilleries, first establishing the site which today houses the Woodford Reserve distillery, and then the James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. In the late 1950s, the bourbon industry fell on hard times and both the brand and the Lexington distillery were abandoned for over half a century. In 2008, the brand was revived by whisky entrepreneur Amir Peay and a distillery was reopened on the original Lexington site in 2017.
