Located 25 kilometres from the Scottish capital (as a result it labels itself "The Edinburg Malt"), Glenkinchie produces whiskies in the purest Lowlands style. This may seem surprising to those who have already visited the distillery: its stills are gigantic (it owns the biggest wash still in Scotland) and its distillate has sulphur notes, which are usually a sign of more robust whiskies. However, it is clear that the style of Glenkinchie malts, notable for their cereal and floral notes, is rather delicate. So much so that they were chosen over Rosebank to represent the Lowlands region in Diageo's Classic Malts series. Founded in 1825 on the site of an old mill, Glenkinchie has performed its own maltings until 1968. It is known for housing a fully functional miniature distillery model, built for the British Empire Exhibition in 1825. It is about to reopen to the public after a massive £185 million investment, including a brand new Johnnie Walker Experience on Princes Street.
